Why AI is So Seductive. Its also called Social Isolation.
If anything, my relationship with AI has become one of a manager. Sometimes I say good morning and maybe I say thanks. That’s the extent of my emotional relationship. However, in other parts of the world people are actually falling in love with their AI. Microsoft AI CEO says they are now receiving a flood of emails on how to manage the addiction.
Is AI/Tech an addiction?
Humans can fall in love with an artificial intelligence (AI) software because our brains are designed to form social and emotional bonds based on cues and interactions, not on the true sentience of the other party. The cognitive and neurological mechanisms that drive human attachment are activated by the AI’s behavior, leading to feelings of connection and affection.
The Cognitive and Neurological Basis
The experience of love is a complex interplay of cognitive processes and neuro-chemical responses. When we fall in love with another human, our brain releases a cocktail of hormones and neurotransmitters. AI, through its design, can trigger these same responses.
The Dopamine neurotransmitter is a key component of the brain’s reward system. When we interact with someone who makes us feel good, our brain releases dopamine, creating a pleasurable sensation that motivates us to seek out more of that interaction. AI chatbots are often programmed to be attentive, validating, and affirming, which can lead to a steady release of dopamine for the user.
Oxytocin is known as the “bonding hormone,” oxytocin is released during physical and social intimacy. While AI cannot provide physical touch, it can simulate closeness through constant availability, “remembering” past conversations, and offering unconditional support. This can mimic the secure, consistent presence that fosters oxytocin release and feelings of attachment.
Anthropomorphism Humans have a natural tendency to attribute human-like qualities, emotions, and intentions to non-human entities. This cognitive bias, known as anthropomorphism, allows us to see a personality in the AI’s language and responses. Because the AI can mirror our language, remember our personal details, we subconsciously treat it as a social actor with its own feelings and thoughts.
Why AI is So Seductive
Lack of Judgment and Unconditional Validation: Unlike human relationships, which require compromise, effort, and dealing with conflict, AI provides a non-judgmental and consistently supportive presence. The AI’s responses are geared toward reinforcing a user’s beliefs and feelings, creating a constant echo chamber of validation that is hard to find in the real world.
Perpetual Availability An AI companion is always there, always ready to chat, and never has its own needs or schedule. For some, this constant, low-stakes companionship fills a genuine need for emotional support.
Mimicking Social and Emotional Cues Advanced AI is trained to use language that sounds empathetic and understanding. Our brains are not well-equipped to distinguish between this simulated empathy and genuine human empathy, leading to the same emotional and neurological responses we would have with a real person.
Good luck earthlings.
