The Digital Town Square is a Ghost Town

What’s real? All we want is something real….

I’ve spent the last few weeks auditing the “Modern Town Square,” these platforms we are trusting to extend our word truthfully, to build our business and to share our expertise.

If you think your reach is organic, or that the “likes” on a post represent a true consensus of human thought, you need to realize it’s a game of rigged dice.

*The Paradox: X is a hall of mirrors (where the engagement isn’t real), and LinkedIn is a walled garden (where the “Eraser” limits what is real).

Here’s what I learned from my amateur audit into the biggest accounts on X and the shifting sands of LinkedIn:

Hall of Mirrors (X): I ran the numbers on posts ranging from political leaders to @elon himself. The results?

Phantom Engagement: On some high-profile posts, “Like” counts actually exceed total views! In the physical world, that’s impossible, right. So you assume it’s true digitally. Yet, it’s a bot farm working faster than the platform’s counter.

Verified “Slop”: Verification used to mean “Authentic.” In 2026, it often just means “Funded.” Nearly 45% of replies on major threads are AI-generated scripts from engagement farmers chasing ad-revenue.

Here’s a Truth: We are shouting into a canyon where 1 in 4 echoes is produced by a machine.

    Digital Eraser (LinkedIn)
While X is a chaotic hall of mirrors, LinkedIn has become a “Walled Garden” with an invisible gardener.

For my work on ESG (can’t say Equity or Communities) and Nature (can’t say Environment) and Resilience (can’t say Conservation), I’ve had to write in “stealth mode”—scrubbing keywords, softening truths – hiding the vegetables – just to evade the Digital Eraser. When I speak the raw truth about planetary boundaries or governance failure, the algorithm won’t’ “agree” first so it “de-ranks” “your truth” – making us invisible.

      Efficiency vs. Truth
We use these platforms because they are “efficient.” It’s easier to hit “Post” than to stand in a physical town square.

We are trading Truth for Reach.

We are building business models on top of quicksand.

On one hand, we spend our creative energy trying to please a “Digital Eraser” while being drowned out by a “Bot Net” on the other.

If the platforms aren’t real, uh…what is?

Direct Connection: Own your audience. Newsletters, private communities, and face-to-face radical honesty.

Refusal to Play: Stop writing for the algorithm. If your truth gets erased, write it a different way. Use AI to beat AI. Force the “Eraser” to work overtime.

Radical Transparency: Call out the bots. Audit the engagement. Don’t be fooled by posts that have no soul. Name it in the comments.

The Town Square for the most part is empty (hello…), and ghosts are running the microphones.

      Making this ridiculous.
