Here’s what I’m thinking after twenty-five years working across global health, climate, finance, and policy: the friction isn’t a bug. It’s the feature.
Political leaders don’t benefit from solutions—they benefit from problems (friction) that require their continued intervention (management). Think about it. When communities resolve conflicts locally, when neighbors coordinate without government mediation, when trust flows horizontally instead of vertically—what exactly do we need expensive intermediaries for?
Policy gridlock isn’t dysfunction. It’s design. Partisan conflict that serves no constituency exists because it serves the structure. Every manufactured crisis creates dependency. Every division that wouldn’t exist without elite amplification generates demand for elite solutions.
The business model is elegant: create the friction, sell the management of friction, stay “needed” forever.

Communities maintain peace, resolve resource disputes, reduce violence through horizontal coordination. They do this despite elite structures, not because of them. The pattern holds globally: local mediation works until geopolitical intervention disrupts it. Community-led conflict resolution succeeds until vertical power needs a crisis to justify its budget.
If you actually listen to what communities know instead of imposing what we think, we would not longer chose traditional top-down models. Because they don’t work. By understanding how trust flows within communities, you can see how to better adopt health interventions, support conservation efforts, participate in civic action.
Not because they’re told to. When they trust.
That’s not revolutionary. It’s obvious. But it threatens the entire premise of friction economics.
I am tired of watching communities get blamed for failing to adopt solutions they never asked for. Especially when we know communities self-organize better than hierarchies ever will.

The question isn’t whether communities can coordinate without vertical control. The question is whether we’re ready to admit we’ve been solving the wrong problems.
We spent $20 trillion annually managing the “friction” that top-down power seems to also create. Conflict prevention costs 100 times less than conflict response, yet we spend 100 times more on response.
And why is that? Because prevention makes intermediaries obsolete. Solutions eliminate the need for managers. Trust threatens the relevance of those whose power depends on its absence.
Environmental collapse and technological disruption are forcing what political will never would: horizontal coordination at scale.
Communities coordinating across borders because vertical structures can’t move fast enough. Citizens organizing because institutions won’t. Technology enabling peer-to-peer coordination that bypasses traditional gatekeepers entirely.
When the stakes are survival and the timeline is now, communities don’t wait for permission.
The transition is here. Decentralization isn’t ideology—it’s evolution.
